Some call it the middle of nowhere. I call it HOME.
I never dreamed I’d grow up to be a crazy chicken lady, but here I am killing it!
Welcome to Lucky Clucks Farm.
Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That’s the problem.
Lucky Clucks Farm is small hobby farm located in Hamilton/Niagara home to chickens and other animals. What started out as a way to get more outdoors with our family and enjoy the Covid lockdowns, has now turned into a labor of love. We simply were going through so many eggs at the time and had all this land that was essentially being unused and even not enjoyed by our family as it should. We started small with just a small flock of 7 back in 2022. We have slowly added to the farm, dealt with Mareks disease and loss, and learned many things along the way. Our farm is managed by myself, my husband and our teen age daughter. We have dogs, cats, a bearded dragon and of course our flock of clucks. On the side, I also design websites, so if that is something you are looking for, please message me.
Where do you get your eggs?
Store vs farm fresh
Yolk differences.
Store bought eggs are months old by the time they reach your home. As the eggs age, they lose nutrients. Thus, resulting in a difference in both the appearance (color) and taste. Yolks from farm eggs are fresh (a couple of weeks old at the most) which result in darker, denser, and a richer taste due to the food sources that are available to them.
Food sources.
Chickens raised in factories are given the minimal food sources that just meet their nutritional needs. Our chickens spend their days outside with natural food sources, natural sunlight, additional nutrients from scraps we give them, as well as nutritional needs such as feed. This results in a richer yolk and a more nutritional egg. Farm fresh eggs are higher in Vitamin D, higher in Omega-3 fatty acids.
Quantity vs Quality.
Our chickens are raised on our hobby farm as pets with benefits. The benefits are eggs obviously but what we have found is that they provide us with peace in our life, and time to spend together as a family outdoors enjoying our acreage. They are treated no differently than our dogs or cats. We ensure their areas are clean, fresh food and water daily, weather proofed to protect them from the elements and predators, and ensure they have enough space to be chickens. Chickens raised in factories or chicken houses are not given the love, affection, and space they need to be chickens. Factories want as many as they can fit into the space to produce as many eggs as possible with the least amount of cost, resulting in the most amount of profit for them. It is a matter of quantity of chickens resulting in a larger quantity of eggs rather than quality like on our farm.
