Building Our Dream Blue Chicken Coop: Lessons We Learned Along the Way
When we first started Lucky Clucks Farm back in 2021, we had a small flock of just seven chickens. Like many backyard chicken keepers, we quickly discovered that one flock has a funny way of becoming two… and then three. Before long, we had outgrown our original setup and started dreaming about a space that would better serve both our animals and our family.
That dream eventually became our blue chicken coop.
This wasn’t just another weekend project—it was months of planning, building, problem-solving, and learning. Every decision was made with the goal of creating a safe, functional home where our chickens and rabbits could thrive year-round while giving us a space we genuinely enjoy spending time in.
Why We Built a New Coop
Our original setup worked well when our flock was small, but as our hobby farm grew, so did our needs.
We wanted a coop that would:
- Safely house a larger flock.
- Make daily chores easier.
- Protect our animals from predators.
- Provide better ventilation and shelter during Ontario’s changing seasons.
- Create a comfortable home for our rabbits as well.
Most importantly, we wanted one central space where everyone could safely live together while still having room to roam.
Planning Before Building
One of the biggest lessons we learned was that planning saves time later.
Before we picked up a single tool, we spent countless hours thinking about:
- Roost placement
- Nesting boxes
- Ventilation
- Covered outdoor runs
- Predator protection
- Cleaning access
- Feed and water locations
- Future flock growth
Every change we made on paper saved us from making a much bigger mistake later.
Building for Ontario Weather
Living in Ontario means preparing for every season.
Our coop was designed to provide shade during hot summer days while still offering plenty of airflow. At the same time, we wanted enough shelter to help our flock stay comfortable during cold winters without sacrificing proper ventilation.
Fresh air is just as important as warmth, especially during the winter months.
Predator Protection Was a Priority
After experiencing predator loss in the past, safety became one of our biggest priorities.
We chose hardware cloth in key areas instead of standard chicken wire, built secure covered runs, and designed the setup so our flock has access to protected outdoor space while remaining safe from many common predators.
Although no setup is ever completely predator-proof, every improvement helps reduce risk.
The Move-In Day
Watching our chickens explore their new home was incredibly rewarding.
As with any change, there was an adjustment period. Egg production slowed, some birds preferred familiar roosting spots, and everyone needed time to establish a new routine.
Eventually, curiosity won out, and one by one they began making the coop their home.
It’s a good reminder that chickens don’t always like change—but with patience, they’ll often adapt better than we expect.
What We’d Do Differently
Every project teaches you something.
If we were starting over tomorrow, we’d spend even more time planning storage, leave room for future expansion from the very beginning, and photograph every stage of construction.
Those little details become invaluable later—not only for improving your own setup but also for helping others who are planning theirs.
Our Biggest Takeaway
The blue coop isn’t perfect, and that’s okay.
It’s a reflection of our family’s journey—learning, adapting, making mistakes, and celebrating small victories along the way.
